The Evolution of the Ford Ranger PX2 & PX3 Centre Console Storage Bin

Some products start as an idea. This one started as a problem.

The factory centre console in the Ford Ranger PX2 and PX3 leaves a lot of unused space. GridShift set out to address this properly — not with a loose insert or something that rattles, but a true direct-fit solution that integrates cleanly and feels factory.

Real-World Testing Across Four Vehicles

The original black variant underwent installation and testing in four different Rangers over one year of daily use. Initial versions demonstrated clean fitment, solid structure, and practical storage capability.

Customer Feedback → Design Refinement

Users identified two primary concerns:

  • The product could be stronger and slightly deeper
  • Removal presented challenges during initial use

An additional request emerged: "Can you make an organiser version with a divider and more functionality?"

What Changed

Strength Upgrades

  • Reinforced wall geometry
  • Improved base support
  • Increased overall durability

Increased Depth

  • Better use of available console volume
  • More usable storage space without interfering with the lid

Two Variants Available

  • Standard Storage Bin — open layout with strength enhancements
  • Organiser Variant — integrated divider and structured storage functionality

Improved Removal

Integrated finger pickup points enable simple, controlled removal.

Rubber Floor Inserts

  • Easier cleaning
  • Reduced rattle
  • Better protection for stored items

The Engineering Challenge

During development, a critical trade-off emerged: increased structural strength began to negatively affect lid fitment.

The bin required:

  • Maintaining factory lid closing behaviour
  • Retaining original latch engagement
  • Sitting firmly without distortion
  • Remaining removable
  • Exceeding original prototype strength

After multiple iterations and structural refinement, GridShift achieved balance between reinforcement and controlled compliance.

Result:

  • ✓ Strength
  • ✓ Fitment
  • ✓ OEM latch retention
  • ✓ Ease of removal
  • ✓ Functional upgrades

Built with Purpose

The product underwent:

  • Multi-vehicle validation
  • One year of real-world use
  • Customer-driven redesign
  • Structural refinement
  • Fitment optimisation
